The article examines the role of war in the life of traditional society. Special attention is paid to the anthropological approach to the warfare. The author notes the characteristics of the war in a primitive society, considers the radical changes in society, associated with the transition to civilization. The article highlighted the distinctive features of the war in the West and in the East, examines the ethical issues of war, considers the factors that ensure the superiority of the Roman military.
