Autonomization as a Means of the Resolution of Ethnopolitical Conflicts in the Modern World

Abstract

The article considers importance of the ethnic autonomization process in three different countries. Firstly, the special status of extended autonomy granted to the Indonesian province of Aceh put an end to the separatist activity and the oldest conflict in Indonesia. The authors note some common features in Indonesia and Russia. Secondly, the experience of Spain as a state of autonomies proves that the balance of strong center and strong regions assures the democratization and the stability of democratic regime. Thirdly, the autonomization in the south of the Philippines succeeded in transforming the armed conflict to a relative peace. Finally, regular violations of the rights of ethnic minorities and disregard of their legitimate claims often result in escalation of ethnopolitical conflicts.
