Literary Allusions in A. S. Byatt’s Fairy Tales

Abstract

The article discusses the features of literary allusions that are found in the fairy tales collection of A. S. Byatt «The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye». The author choose general inclusions of allusion, that are present in all fairy tales, and at the same time points to the individuality of these allusions in the context that allows one side to see the unity of the entire collection, and on the other hand, the uniqueness of each fairy tale. It is also noteworthy that the literary allusions - one of the essential differences between the literary fairy tale and folklore, that due to the absence in the second game with the reader. Detailed classification of literary allusions, according to research by D. Dyurishin and N. Piege-Gro. Based on this classification, the sampled allusions Byatt’s fairy tales, where there are paraphrased, explicit and implicit citations. These quotes are appealing to the documented facts of real historical reality, intersect with mythology, show a common customs, that gives the text emotional intensity, versatility descriptions of events, characters, and actions. The author indicates that the encoding information should be designed to enable the reader to unravel the hint that promoted «identification» elements, which are called markers or representative allusions. Types of markers with examples are following then. Literary allusions play an important role in the literary fairy tale, because by using them in a new context revived images, names, phrases and passages from famous works that reflect the realities of life. This allows the reader to relate the philosophical foundations of modern society with allusive mirror world of different literature sources.
